Fungal Nail Infections (Tinea Unguium):

  • Are caused by walking in an affected area in bare feet, or exposure to contaminated foot wear
  • Is mildly contagious
  • Is not due to diet
  • Typically does not permanently damage the nail
  • Affects toe nails much more commonly than finger nails
  • Is often associated with ‘Athlete’s Foot’ – dryness and cracking of the skin between the toes
  • Is not a sign of diabetes or poor circulation
  • Does not require a person to use separate bathing facilities from the rest of the family
  • Is present in 80% of the population by the age of 80
