Melasma (Cholasma):
- Is pigmentation that occurs on the upper lip, cheeks, forehead and chin
- Is sometimes also known by the names:
- Cholasma
- The mask of pregnancy
- It may be caused by:
- Female hormones
- Hormone replacements
- The birth control pill
- Pregnancy
- Other medications
- Sometimes there is no obvious cause
- Sun exposure is extremely important in causing the pigmentation to occur and to come back after treatment
Treatment
- There is a wide variety of skin lightening creams available over the counter
- You must use a good sunscreen every day, even if it is cloudy
- Even a small amount of sun exposure can reverse the effects of the skin lightening creams
- Avoid the outdoors between the hours of 10 AM and 3 PM when the sun is strongest
- Wear a broad brimmed hat
