Folliculitis
Serving Hamilton, Stoney Creek, Grimsby and surrounding areas
Folliculitis:
- Is an infection or inflammation of a hair follicle
- Usually appears as tiny 1 mm to 3 mm pink pumps or “white heads” with a single hair visible in the centre of each lesion
- May be caused by applying excessive amounts of gel, moisturizer, pomades, oils, conditioner to the scalp or body
- May also be caused by getting heavy oils, greases, cutting oils and tar on the skin
- May be caused by the use of steroids ointments on the skin
Treatment
- Avoid tight clothing
- Use mineral make-up that will not block your pores
- Avoid applying heavy oils and other greasy or oily products to the skin or scalp
- Use an antiseptic cleanser to wash your skin or hair every day
- Antibiotic lotions or solutions may be applied to the affected area twice daily
- In stubborn cases antibiotic pills may be required
- In some cases the folliculitis returns as soon as the antibiotics are stopped and the antibiotics have to be continued for 2 months or more
- In stubborn cases, microdermabrasion, chemical peels, and laser hair removal can be very helpful
