Fungal Nail Infections (Tinea Unguium):
- Are caused by walking in an affected area in bare feet, or exposure to contaminated foot wear
- Is mildly contagious
- Is not due to diet
- Typically does not permanently damage the nail
- Affects toe nails much more commonly than finger nails
- Is often associated with ‘Athlete’s Foot’ – dryness and cracking of the skin between the toes
- Is not a sign of diabetes or poor circulation
- Does not require a person to use separate bathing facilities from the rest of the family
- Is present in 80% of the population by the age of 80

- There are both pills and topical therapy (lacquer) available
